Celebrating The Great Christmas Holiday itself

The Wonders Of Christmas Tree Shopping

The biggest and greatest sign that Christmas is approaching is the day of Christmas tree shopping.  Along with what I've already talked about, Christmas tree shopping is a great experience as well.  Some people prefer to get pre-cut trees while others prefer establishments where they cut their own trees.  Either way, both experiences are almost equally exciting.  The people that prefer a pre-cut tree are usually those who just want a tree and don't feel the need to do a bunch of work to get it.  Those like myself who cut their own trees, usually do it that way for a couple reasons.  First off, it feels good to say that you cut your own tree down for Christmas.  Also, cutting your own tree really gives you a chance to experience something that a lot people of never get to.  At the farms, the trees have the wonderful odors and everyone is very happy and excited about the tree they are getting.  Getting your tree is a very interesting experience because different trees have pluses and minuses.  For example, some smell more than others while others have needles that are soft versus hard.  Personally, I tend to pick the trees that smell the best.  A good smelling tree always adds a great spirit inside the house because the smell is a reminder that Christmas is coming shortly.  The hard part is sometimes it is hard to pick the tree that smells the most because there are so many smells mingling together.  In addition to smell and feel of the needles, the type of tree is also one big consideration for many people.  Some prefer what we call a "christmas bush" which is a tree where the branches are very close together.  On the other hand, what we call a "christmas tree," the branches are further apart or spaced out.  The advantage to branches that are farther apart is that there is more room for decorations to be hung.  When the branches are close together, the decorations are sometimes hanging so close together that they knock each other off.

Besides smell and look, price must also be considered when picking out a tree.  Often times the nicer trees tend to be more expensive.  A nice tree might be a silver tip which is probably in the $100 range.  On the other hand, a noble fir is not quite as nice looking but it is much less expensive ranging from about 30 to 50 dollars.  The silver tip tree is more of the "christmas tree" mentioned above while the noble fir is more of the "christmas bush." This is probably why the silver tip is much more expensive.

The Wild And Whacky Weather Arround Christmas

The Wild And Wacky Weather Around Christmas

Another sign of the approaching holidays is the wild weather patterns.  Most people seem to love all the rain but some don't.  The people that don't like the rain sometimes have a good reason.  For example, it makes the road slippery and increases the risk of fender benders which are not good.  Also, rain means getting wet while walking to class or from the car to the work place.  Personally, the rain is one of the signs of Christmas.   The rain in my opinion also adds a pleasant feeling to the air.  The air begins to smell nice and almost has a sort of cold steam to it.  The cold steam feeling almost reminds me of the snow because it also adds that cold feeling to the air.  When I feel the cold steam, it gives me a happy feeling as if life could get no better than just standing in the cool air and breathing in that cool steam.  In addition to the good feelings the rain brings, it also helps the environment.  When I feel that Christmas rain, I know that we will have lots of fresh water in the rivers for the summer.  Besides the rain, the wind is also very exciting.  The good news about the wind is that you don't get wet.  Instead you just feel the cold air blast in your face while outside and hear it roar when in the house.  Hearing the roaring wind gives me some idea what the people who live in hurricane country get to hear when a hurricane comes.

When the cold rain comes, it is time for hot chocolate and warm soup.  Both of these are great foods to have when it comes to the Christmas season.  These foods are good to have especially in the rainy weather because they are warm and taste very good.  In addition to tasting good, both hot chocolate and soup smell delicious while they are cooking.  Since the food smells so good, it also brings family together while the food is being cooed.  While enjoying the smell of the coking food, it is a good time for bonding with family members.  Another good type of food for the holidays is baked desserts such as pie cookies and cake.  Besides tasting really good, these desserts are really easy and fun to make.  Again, these also smell very good and bring family together but for a different reason.  Lots of baked desserts are easier to make when there are two or more people working in the kitchen because they have different jobs.  For example one person might prep the oven while the other stirs the ingredients together.

The Great Christmas Thrills

The great Christmas Thrills

The Wonderful Music

When Christmas comes, it is very exciting.  Almost everywhere there is Christmas music playing ranging from the on campus restaurants at colleges to the radio stations across the bay area.  My favorite music comes from 96.5 KOIT radio station which starts their music immediately after Thanks Giving.  The station plays all the Christmas songs that exist and some great commercials for fun activities.  Some of the activities I have heard about include great deals on Christmas trees, Christmas cruises run by Horn Blower Yachts on the San Francisco bay or free Disneyland tickets.  Most of the offers are the type that you have to be the first person to call the station to win the activity.  Unfortunately, I have never been one to call in early enough because I sleep in a lot.  Also, some organizations use musical catches in their advertising.  For example, the Academy Of Sciences museum changes the phrase "and a happy new year" in the song We Wish You A merry Christmas to, "And a happy new time span of the earth to revolve around the sun." The music ranges from songs that are more for children to those that everyone likes.  An example of a children's Christmas song might be Santa Clause Is Coming To Town whereas a song that the general population likes might be Home For The Holidays.  While some songs are more for children, they are still sung by adults which makes them sometimes better depending on the singer.  I think this is partly because adults tend to be professionals and know how to sing better.

I can't remember exactly when I first heard of KOIT, but it was definitely around Christmas.  I believe it was while I was riding the school bus back in high school because this was the station the driver always played.  No wonder I always dreaded getting off the bus at home.  Although I had to ride that bus for an hour with a bunch of screaming kids, the good music sure mad up for it.  The reason the kids were screaming on the bus is because the bus I took was what is known as the short bus.  True to its name, this bus is a smaller bus used for disabled students.  It was always hard leaving the great music because the songs were so good.  However, once I learned the name of the station, I realized that I didn't have to be on the bus to get great Christmas music.  All I had to do was tune into the radio station.  Some of the places I would tune into the radio station include my Braille computer which has a built in FM radio and my parents' car.  In fact, KOIT's Christmas music was what got me started listening to the radio in the first place.
